Jaqk of All Trades

JAQK of All Trades

61cm x 122cm, made on canvas with spray paint, acrylic, enamel, paint pen, oil pen, epoxy - pretty much anything you can think of..

The phrase “Jack of all trades” usually carries an implied criticism. I have never seen it that way. The world encourages us to become one thing; I’ve always been more interested in becoming many.

For me, art in particular has brought with it a great deal of humility. It has shown me that willingness, intelligence, and confidence do not guarantee mastery, and that the work will usually expose whatever certainty I bring to it.

Cards have suits. So do people. Artist is one of mine.

A suit can represent profession, status, identity, or simply the role we choose—or are expected—to play. Here, those suits surround the heart—but do they define it? Or does it work both ways? The question becomes whether love can endure the pressures of the suits, even with the Queen of Hearts ever the largest, looming suit of all… whatever it is she stands for.

The crowns and the solitary S? Well, those are there for people who already know why. If you don’t know, I ain’t telling you.

JAQK of All Trades is ultimately about identity. We spend our lives changing suits, learning new roles, and taking on new challenges. The suits of the world may surround the heart, but they should never replace it.
